Reference standard of whiteness unit

Developed and operated since 2008

Standard composition:

  • Reference standards ISO IR3, which represent three sets, made of paper, which doesn’t contain fluorescent optical whiteners (FOW);
  • Non-fluorescent (NRS) and fluorescent (FRS) reference standards which are represented in the form of 2 sets. The first set consists of 10 whiteness measures, made of milk glass MS-20. The second set consists of 6 whiteness measures, made of milk glass MS-20 with special fluorescent coating on the working surface;
  • Spectrophotometer «Elrepho 071»;
  • Measurement geometry: d/0; light source – pulsed xenon lamp; the diameter of the illuminated area of the tested samples – 6,6 / 9,0 / 30 mm, the position of the tested sample – horizontal; automatic regulation of ultraviolet component fraction in radiation is provided; carrying out of measurements taking into account a mirror component and with its exception;
  • Spectrophotometer «X –Rite. series 8400»;
  • Measurement geometry: d/8; light source – pulsed xenon lamp; the diameter of the illuminated area of the tested samples – 4,0 / 8,0 / 19,0 mm, the position of the tested sample – horizontal and from the end-face; automatic regulation of ultraviolet component fraction in radiation is provided. It is possible to conduct measurements of spectral coefficients of regular transmission of transparent samples; carrying out measurements taking into account a mirror component and with its exception;
  • Spectrophotometer «Color Eye – 2145»;
  • Measurement geometry: 45/0; light source – pulsed xenon lamp; the diameter of the illuminated area of the tested samples – 10 mm, the position of the tested sample – from the end-face

Metrological characteristics:

Measurement ranges:

  • brightness according to ISO, R457 – from 0 to 200 whiteness units;
  • Whiteness index according to MKO, W10 – from 0 to 200 whiteness units

Non-excluded systematic error (for materials, that do not contain FOW):

  • brightness according to ISO, R457– 0,3 whiteness units;
  • whiteness index, W10 – 0,3 whiteness units

Non-excluded systematic error (for materials, that contain FOW):

  • brightness according to ISO, R457– 0,6 whiteness units;
  • whiteness index, W10 – 0,6 whiteness units

random error (for materials, that do not contain FOW):

  • brightness according to ISO, R457 – 0,031 whiteness units;
  • whiteness index W10 – 0,034 whiteness units

random error (for materials, that contain FOW):

  • brightness according to ISO, R457– 0,040 whiteness units;
  • whiteness index W10 – 0,036 whiteness units

extended uncertainty (for materials, that do not contain FOW):

  • brightness according to ISO, R457 – 0,5 whiteness units;
  • whiteness index W10 – 0,5 whiteness units

Extended uncertainty (for materials, that contain FOW):

  • brightness according to ISO, R457 – 1,0 whiteness units;
  • whiteness index W10 – 1,0 whiteness units

Calibration and measurement capabilities of the standard are confirmed through the traceability to the international whiteness unit, reproduced by primary standard ISO IR1.
